Art of Resistance - After the Fire

An Immersive Exhibition 12pm - 6pm: Fyfe Hall

What makes an activist? What makes people take action and create artwork? What is or isn’t art or an artefact? After The Fire is a thought-provoking odyssey through the sounds and sights of Bristol’s protest history in recent years.

On the hour from 1pm until 5pm, we will have 15 minute immersive interventions - visceral performances by Bristol based artists symbolising 5 themes: PUNK, UPRISING, SPOKEN TRUTH, IDENTITY & REVOLUTION.

This event is part of our in-house programme Trinity Presents – celebrating our diverse City and platforming emerging talent and is a collaboration with  Art of Resistance our two-year, National Heritage Lottery Funded project charting 100 years of protest in Bristol.

Take part in carnival style dance at this years Harbour Festival

Trinity have curated a two-day programme of dance as part of this years Harbour Festival (16/17 July).

Following on from the success of 2019’s Bristol Dances stage we have reached out across the city to give audiences a taste of the wide-ranging professional, community and cultural dance Bristol has to offer.

Over two days audiences will experience the breadth of dance in the city from Irish Dancing to Bharathnatyam Dance to Voguing. Highlights include DMAC's Afrikan Dance, Drumming, Indigenous Storytelling & Capoeira Angola, performances from award-winning dance troupes, HYPE and Miss Daisy’s and Decolonising Memory: Digital Bodies In Movement.

D_wild Fitness will get people  moving with their dance fitness classes featuring afrobeats, soca and dancehall music. Enjoy samba-inspired drumming and dance troupe, Bristol Samba and acoustic performances from Aisha Ali, Bemudian folk artist Anna Colette and Portuguese neo-soul singer Luna Kali.

This year we also continue our commitment to collaborating with collectives and organisations who are working to amplify grassroots voices. This showcase will feature KIOTA collective, Bristol’s Got Talent and musicians from Lorraine Ayensu Refugee Arts organisation. The Art of Resistance showcase, inspired by the rich history of creative protest in Bristol, will feature some of Bristol’s best and up-and-coming arts activists working across poetry, performance and movement.

As part of the take-over we asked cultural and community organisations across Bristol to submit content for a film about Bristol's cultural offer. This film was shared the delegate including MP's and policy makers.

Trinity teamed up with Radix to programme a two-hour takeover at this year’s Big Tent Ideas Festival 2022.

Radix is a UK Think Tank whose work re-imagines societies, their Big Tent Festival is an opportunity for the public to take part in conversations to help shape UK policies.

For the festival we curated a jam-packed slot featuring keynotes and panel discussions to reflect the power and benefits of arts; personally, socially, and economically. St Pauls Carnival Executive Director LaToyah McAllister-Jones, Bristol Ideas Acting Director Naomi Miller and Knowle West Media Centre CEO Carolyn Hassan used their unique experience to discuss ways to democratise decision making and build ownership of arts and culture.

Gritty Talent Founder and CEO Melanie Rodrigues and TV industry consultant and specialist discussed the regional role of Bristol as a city of culture and its relationship to creative industries. Comedian and Writer Angie Belcher discussed arts for health & well-being whilst Quartet Community Foundation CEO Suzanne Rolt led a keynote on art for learning and social change

The programme also featured performances from City Poet Caleb Parkin, Hype Dance, Desperate Men, Edson Burton, Sheila Hannon and Lottie Ball - all showcasing Bristol's rich cultural offer.

Lullabies, created by multi-disciplinary artist Roxana Vilk, reached out and connected with communities across Bristol, recording and collecting songs from the many people who call Bristol home.

Initially developed during an IGNITE residency the project was selected to be part of the national project Here and Now to celebrate the National Lottery 25th Anniversary. Initially, Roxana worked with partners deliver song and music workshops in local community centres. However, due to the impact of the pandemic Roxana moved these workshops online meaning her project began to connect with people across the world.

Roxana used the sounds and stories of the people taking part in the project to influence the project. This saw a one person who initially took part in a workshop became a collaborator, helping in the delivery of the music-based workshops.

To celebrate Lullabies, Roxana staged a two day Trinity take over. She collaborated with tech-creatives Squidsoup to create an immersive, interactive performance inspired by the Lullabies journey with movement from dancers Delicia and Marianna, Real World Studios, Arron Hussain.

Bristol-based illustrator, Jasmine Thompson created portraits of some the families who took part in Lullabies exhibited and outside in the garden DJ’s staged a Baby Rave for the youngest members of our communities (plus their grownups).

Roxana is further developing her creative practice working with Bristol and Bath Creative R+D to further explore the Lullabies Project and is developing an ‘Adaptative Podcast’ with brand new technology featuring the co-creators Lullabies.

Projects like Lullabies are at the heart of Trinity’s commitment to artistic development.  We offer paid commissions to artists to develop work in collaboration with communities as well as artist residencies, free/subsided hire for R&D and producer and marketing support.

Annette Curtain is Bristol’s biggest gossip and she’s hosting the glitziest, glammest drag cabaret screening of Muriel's Wedding ever.

About Muriel's Wedding

Socially awkward Muriel Heslop wants nothing more than to get married. Unfortunately, due to her oppressive politician father, Muriel has never even been on a date. Ostracized by her more socially adept friends, Muriel runs into fellow outcast Rhonda Epinstalk, and the two move from their small Australian town to the big city of Sydney, where Muriel changes her name and begins the arduous task of redesigning her life to match her fantasies reminding us of the importance of transformation and chosen families.

About Tom Marshmam

Tom Marshman (Annette Curtain) is a Bristol based queer artist, having worked in cabaret, theatre and live art for over 20 years, he was recently appointed the Strike a light - Let artist be artists post.

About Mariana Trench

Mariana Trench is deep, mysterious and responsible for the disappearance of several amateur divers. She is one of Bristol’s most in demand performers, with quick wit and enough talent to blow not only your socks off, but your whole outfit.

In these challenging times, Trinity and Cambridge Junction have come together to offer a £3,000 commission to a D/deaf or Disabled Artist(s) to create work for an online audience.

We will commission one new piece of work and want the brief to be as open as possible, so you can respond in a way that best suits you as an artist. We welcome artists of any practice, working in any art-form, to apply.

We want to commission:

• A brand-new online performance/exhibition that can remain available to experience for a set period of time – we want people to be able to experience your work safely from their homes

• One artist who identifies as D/deaf or Disabled, or a collective of artists where at least 50% of the collective identify as D/deaf or Disabled

• Work that will be completed and distributed online before the end of October 2020

East Bristol Contemporary (EBC) is an artist-led gallery based at Trinity and established in 2016.

EBC seek to counteract the lack of established showing spaces for grass roots contemporary artists in Bristol and established a unique and diverse programme of exhibitions and events.

The National Youth Theatre of Great Britain is bringing Auditions to Bristol’s The Trinity Centre on Mon 17th February and Sun 23rd February in 2020 as part of their search for talented young performers and creatives across the UK.

Are you a young performer aged 14-25? Auditions are now open to join The National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, a company of talented actors, musicians, designers and technicians.

Take part in a 3 hour audition preparation workshop followed by a 1-2-1 audition with a monologue of your choice. Bursaries are available.

Workshop leader Neus Gil Cortés, founder of NUA Dance offers an open and engaging workshop for the curious amongst you. NUA Dance aim to make every participant feel that they leave having explored their own thoughts and have found a way to physically celebrate their own voice.

About Neus Gil Cortés...

With more than ten years of experience as a dance artist, Neus previously danced in companies such as Hofesh Shechter Company, National Dance Company Wales, Protein and Dance Works Rotterdam, amongst others. 

As a choreographer, her work has been commissioned worldwide, including performances at festivals such as World Stage Design and Ellas Crean, companies such as Frontier Danceland (Singapore) and several national CAT programmes, including the London Youth Circus.

She has taught workshops for people over 50s for East London Dance- Leap of Faith, Damn Fine Dance, CD60+ and Retrospectif.

We'll be opening up doors at 3:30pm with the first match beginning at 4:00pm to give you enough time to settle in before we start!
