Sober Summer Day Party Back at Trinity

As festival season brings a wave of events across the city, Bristol Sober Spaces' Summer Day Party offers an alternative: a space to dance, connect and enjoy live music, without alcohol at the center of it.

Following on from our successful first summer day party last year with Roni Size, Nicky Black market and Milly On Air, this August we’re teaming up with Trinity once again to bring a day full of funk, soul, jungle and DnB, without the hangover. The day will start with funk and soul vibes from TJA and Stone ColdHustle, before we hand the party over to Anything But Becky, Any Jungle in Gals, and closing out with Bristol DnB and jungle legend Aries. Alongside the music, expect craft areas, a sober meet-up space hosted by Sober Circle, market stalls, a chance to find out more about Fight Klub, food trucks, and – thanks to feedback from our sober ticket holders - a coffee van!

Bristol Sober Spaces events are for anyone and everyone who wants to come to the night - you don't have to sober 24/7, just for this event. We are all about focusing on the music and normalizing sober night life.

Since our founding in 2022, our mission has been simple: to host regular, high quality, accessible and affordable live events that are completely drug and alcohol free. We began with National Lottery funding through Not Saints (the world’s only recovery record label), and are now firmly established as a partnership between Trinity and BDP Creative Communities (Bristol Drugs Project). We’ve booked artists like Roni Size, Jumpin’ Jack Frost, Nicky Blackmarket and Dazee, and worked with venues like Trinity, Rough Trade, LocoKlub, Jam Jar, Basement 45, and Bristol Beacon.

Our safe and welcoming event shave included drum and bass, garage, world, hip hop, house, metal, punk and queer, there’s something for everyone. Our events are great nights out in themselves, with the added benefits of no hangovers, saving money, enjoying music and performance with a clear head, and feeling part of a community and rapidly emerging scene.

“Bristol Sober Spaces just keeps getting bigger and bigger – more new audience members, more artists getting in touch to perform, and more venues wanting to collaborate." Sophie, Bristol Sober Spaces coordinator

Quotes from past events:

Roni Size “It was incredible performing to all those people, some of whom were going through recovery. It was a totally different feeling to what I’m used to”

Jumpin Jack Frost “Massive love to the Sober Space Bristol. Absolutely wickedvibes. A sold-out show, pure energy, and a proper community all coming together-proof that you don’t need anything extra to feel that high.”

Milly on Air "There's something really special about playing at sober events. People are so engaged and so present"

"These events are not just for people that are sober because maybe they've had a problem in the past, but also for people that just don't want to wake up tomorrow with a hangover." Jade, Bristol Sober Spaces volunteer and event participant

"I found it's a really beautiful experience. You're surrounded by people that are present and engaged. It's just one of the best feelings being on the dance floor without alcohol." Event participant

Phylum Vol. II presents a transnational conversation on art, architecture and design.

Welcome UWE professor and researcher, Dr Fidel Meraz and Canadian artist, Jonathan Luckhurst, whilst they explore architecture as not only a built space, but as an arena for reimagining more sustainable and inclusive futures.

Jonathan Luckhurst will present Proposals for Reimagined Futures, his current body of work that draws on deep time ecological strategies to suggest how both humans and the Earth might respond to the current environmental crisis. Whilst, Dr Fidel Meraz, will highlight Bristol's local architectural context through his photography and research surrounding the Trinity Art Centre's new location to be housed in the historic Jacob Wells Baths building.

For full artist bios, please click here

Two 20-minute artist presentations will be followed by a live Q&A. The evening concludes with an opportunity to exchange ideas and make new connections.

About Phylum:
Phylum Artist Talks presents artists and designers working at the intersection of ecology, sustainability and social practice. Creatives today play a vital role in bridging the gap between research and positive action. Taking place in Bristol, their programme brings together established and emerging artists to share future-facing projects and explore the most pressing issues of our time.

Powerful and provocative theatre

Eve has been around since the dawn of humanity, the turn of the century, and since last week. Eve is every woman; she is indigenous; she is a pregnant teenage girl, a domestic abuse survivor. She is a witch, hysterical, insane. She is evil, and she is responsible for humanity's fall from grace.

Powerful and provocative, Mandala's new play exposes the lies societies have been fed by organised religion and politics, exploring who controls the narrative and what truth got buried along the way.

Through their unique brand of theatricality, humour, innovative staging, compelling characters and powerful epic storytelling, Mandala tell the story of Eve....Accused, suppressed, abused, silenced, but now rising, waking up to her full power as creator, nurturer, wisdom-keeper - restoring the balance between Masculine and Feminine energy, to ultimately suggest new vision and hope.

About Mandala Theatre Company
Mandala Theatre Company is an ethnically diverse-led company based in East Oxford. They are committed to using theatre as a force for social change and to working with young people and artists from the global majority and disadvantaged backgrounds. This play has been developed with young people, student groups and women's groups in Oxford, Luton, Salford and Bristol, in line with Mandala's trademark dedication to co-creation with those with lived experience, and telling the stories that so often go untold.
