Spend 24 hours co-creating digital technology to help refugees and asylum seekers!

The first Bristol Refugee Hackday will take place on 24th and 25th June in Trinity Arts Centre, as part of Bristol Refugee Festival.

It aims to bring those with coding and technical skills, social media and web skills together with those who have experience of the asylum system and the needs of refugees and asylum seekers in Bristol; to use digital technology to help refugees and asylum seekers in Bristol and beyond.

“We want to plant the seeds to develop digital tools to help with some of the issues that asylum seekers and refugees in Bristol, and those who work to support them, face in their day to day lives.”

They are looking for people with relevant skills to attend and pooling their time, knowledge and skills, to work together in teams on new ways to address issues faced by asylum seekers, refugees and organisations that support them in the digital era.

These skills include

knowledge of refugee organisations

experience of seeking asylum in the UK

language skills

coding

web developing

data analytics

design

communications

social media

Hackdays or Hackathons are events that bring people with different skills together to develop digital projects around an issue or theme and usually take place over a weekend.

Around the world Hackathons to support refugees have generally been very successful, we believe Bristol has the skills, assets and organisational infrastructure to create something that can be useful in Bristol and beyond.

PM Studio resident Nik Rawlings (Ni-Ku) presents 3 x 30 mins R&D performances of their new research work breathing.systems.

breathing.systems explores fluid, mediated and granular experiences of gender, embodiment and neurodiversity. Using a custom wireless multi speaker sound system worn on the bodies of performers, they create a network of live voices and a communal sound body to sing through.

Temporal, relational and shifting experiences of selfhood, embodiment and gender are a fundamental theme in the work. Spanning Gregorian chant and Sacred Harp singing; club and spiritual, breathing.systems asks- how does a voice tell the story of its body when it is heard through a network? Without the feedback of others’ skin, where does your own body end? Growing new self-hoods and forgetting, destroying or recycling discarded ones; forming in relation to and absorbing others. Each performer/speaker in the work forms a networked node and a collaborator, a carrier and a community member.

About the company

Nik Rawlings is a Counter Tenor vocalist, Artist and DJ/Promoter. They often make work that considers experiences of remote networked presence, polymorphous bodies and vocal transformation. They have shown work at LUMA in Zurich, Guest Projects London and ran the MegaLast and AfterTouch clubnights at Dalston Superstore and residency on Noods Radio.

Performances will last approx. 30 minutes

“breathing.systems has been generously supported by a grant from Bristol + Bath Creative R+D, with further support from Trinity, Sennheiser and Minirig”

Bear’s Den will release their Ivor Novello nominated single ‘Above The Clouds Of Pompeii’ on July 27th. Watch the official video on YouTube here.

‘Above The Clouds Of Pompeii’ is taken from Bear’s Den’s debut album ‘Islands’ which is out now on Communion Records / Caroline International, and was written by the band’s Andrew Davie.

Speaking of the song, Davie says, “It’s an amalgamation of many of my feelings growing up. Trying to connect with people and also my first times dealing with loss. My Dad and I went on a trip to Pompeii when I was really young and I was thinking about it one day, nostalgically and also kinda painfully remembering stuff from when I was a kid and trying to communicate how I felt back then. That Pompeii trip made a huge impression on me and seemed to be the right place and time in my childhood for me to try and articulate all those things.

“I wrote Above The Clouds Of Pompeii a few years ago, in the back of a VW camper van, on Bear's Den's first ever tour in America. Ben Howard, Nathaniel Rateliff and The Staves were also on that tour and it was hugely inspiring to be surrounded by so many talented songwriters night after night.”

A feature-length music documentary of this tour, ‘Austin To Boston’, will get its global release on 12th June via Netflix and iTunes, fresh from a successful run of screenings at international film festivals. The film was directed by James Marcus Haney (No Cameras Allowed), produced by Ben Lovett (Mumford & Sons) & Ty Johnson (Sideshow Alley), and narrated by Gill Landry (Old Crow Medicine Show).

After kicking off her shoes to paint barefoot, Chi-Yien Snow (https://chiyiensnow.com/) earned her spot as champion and took home the Golden Brush! She’ll be returning as the headline artist and we can’t wait to see what she creates with more time.

All works created, including Krystan’s, will be available for silent auction on the night, bridging the gap between creators and collectors, creating a supportive creative community, and allowing audiences to take away a part of the night to remember.

As always, tickets are 50% for students and concessions to make sure we give everyone the opportunity to share in this amazing experience.

All art materials for the artists to show off their skills along with prizes for winners are provided by our principal sponsor, Daler-Rowney. T-Shirts come from our local print shop The Live Ink Co.

The team at Colston Hall bring Ariel Pink the king of pop perversion to Trinity Centre. Across its 17 tracks and 69 minutes, new album pom pom is unfiltered Ariel: a Pied Piper of the absurd, with infectious tales of romance, murder, frog princes and Jell-O. The record sees the Los Angeles native strike it out alone, returning to the solo moniker he has adopted for well over a decade – and this could well be his magnum opus.

Los Angeles-based one-man band and pied-piper of the absurd Ariel Pink’s lo-fi, Baroque music was first discovered by indie group Animal Collective, who began releasing volumes of Ariel Pink home recordings on their Paw Tracks label. 2004’s ‘The Doldrums’ came first, and gained Pink both critical acclaim and a cult following.

Having formed the band Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti in order to bring his recordings to life, he signed with indie label 4AD late in 2009, and the next year released his highest-selling record to date, ‘Before Today’. His 2014 release, ‘Pom Pom’, saw Pink return to his solo moniker, and features songs written with 60s novelty record producer and musician, Kim Fowley.

Ariel Pink began songwriting at the age of ten, with early influences deriving from pop acts such as Hall & Oates, Michael Jackson, 10cc, Fleetwood Mac, and David Bowie. After a stint studying visual art at the California Institute of the Arts,Pink switched his artistic focus to songcraft for good.
