Cabaret is having yet another moment with the hit show in the West End but this 1972 cinematic version, with the magnificent Liza Minelli and Joel Grey, will always be a tough act to follow.

A reserved British writer arrives in Berlin and meets Sally Bowles, a performer at the Kit Kat Club who introduces him to divine decadence, darling! Their story is set against a backdrop of the rapid rise of fascism but, for tonight night, as the MC says, “Leave your troubles outside. So life is disappointing, forget it! In here life is beautiful”

Join us for this special outdoor screening with live performance from Bristol Musical Comedy Club to set the scene and transport us back to 1930s Berlin. Dressing up encouraged, singing along welcome.

A 6hr film screening as part of Bristol Radical Film Festival

The Bristol Radical Film Festival screens socially and politically engaged documentary and fiction films from around the world.

La Commune is an attempt to challenge existing notions of documentary film, as well as the notions of 'neutrality' and 'objectivity' so beloved by the mass media today. We travel back in time to 1871. A journalist for Versailles Television broadcasts a soothing and official view of events while a Commune television is set up to provide the perspectives of the Paris rebels. On a stage-like set, more than 200 actors interpret characters of the Commune. They voice their own thoughts and feelings concerning the social and political reforms.

The telling of this story rests primarily on depicting the people of the Commune, and those who suppressed them. “I hope that the open form of ʻLa Communeʼ, and especially the process of discussion and community activity which can accompany the film screening, will help to forge the kind of collectivity, and frontal resistance to globalization and its satellite mass media which is now needed” (Peter Watkins).

The film lasts 345 mins and will have a 30 minute intermission between parts 1 and 2.

As a community arts space, Trinity is committed to our core values of being a ‘Centre for the People’ and platforming work as part of our programme that represents and reflects our diverse communities.

A powerful exploration of the lives of women.

Girl Power is a documentary that presents female graffiti writers from fifteen cities – from Prague to Moscow, Cape Town, Sydney, Biel, Madrid, Berlin, Toulouse, Barcelona and all the way to New York. The graffiti community is predominantly a man's world, and men often share the view that graffiti – namely the illegal kind – is not for girls. And yet women have become increasingly more emancipated in recent years; there are female graffiti shows, magazines and websites. Girl Power captures the stories of ladies who have succeeded in the male graffiti world.
However, Girl Power is more than just a look into the graffiti microcosm; it tells the moving story of Czech writer Sany, who decided in 2009 to capture female emancipation in graffiti on film and to give other girls and women the possibility to express themselves. It took her 7 long years to complete the documentary. We follow her life with graffiti, her motivation and values that keep changing as the years go by. We will also meet her family, who are absolutely unaware of Sany's "second life". Sany sacrifices a lot for the film, but even when she's at the end of her tether, she refuses to give up on her dream – to make the very first movie depicting females in graffiti.

The Battle of Denham Ford

The Battle of Denham Ford tells the story of attempts by HS2 contractors to fell a tree that overhung their compound. A protest camp sits adjacent to the compound, and, hearing of the plan, the activists installed a climber in the tree.

Precarity Story

A short documentary that tells the work story of Isabel, a cleaner, hourly-paid teacher, and researcher in the same British university. Her story stands as an example of the increasing casualisation of university labour and its human consequences.

This is a free event organised by Drs Dave Green and Michal Nahman, sociologists at The University of the West of England (UWE).
The evening's themes will be introduced by Professor Phil Cole, an expert at UWE on the politics of migration. We will then be screening two films on the themes of migration and exile.

Leaving Greece Anna Brass / Germany / 2013 / 79 min

The film tells the very personal story of three young Afghan refugees: Hossein, Reza and Kaka, who are stranded in Greece and have tried for years to enter Europe.

Boya Boya (Shine Shine) Karen Boswall, Ruba Al Akash / Jordan, UK / 2014 / 18 min

A portrait of Syrian refugee Mohammed, a 12-year-old shoe shine boy, Boya Boya looks at the reality of the growing population of urban refugees from a child's point of view. This will then be followed by a panel of people drawn from local communities and organisations and academics to answer audience questions, debate and discuss the issues raised by the evening.
