Trinity presents: is our in house programme of live music and club nights inspired by Trinity’s rich music history; presenting the best of local and national artists whose sounds push new ideas in music.

Internationally revered poet, writer and socio-political commentator Benjamin Zephaniah returns to Trinity on his Spring tour of the re-release of his: Revolutionary Minds album.

Benjamin Zepahaniah is widely celebrated as one of the greatest poets of his generation, Zephaniah is strongly influenced by the music and poetry of Jamaica and what he calls “street politics”. His poetry, books and plays have captivated hearts and minds, fuelling imaginations and winning him a legion of fans all over the world.

Though his music is lesser known than his written work it is no less fervent. Created alongside his accomplished producer and collaborator The Sea, Revolutionary Minds album is a deep selection of dub-reggae juggernauts, the essence and style of which fully reinforce the messages projected through Zephaniah’s powerful lyrics

At a seemingly tumultuous and divisive period in our society, Revolutionary Minds revitalises the neglected art of the protest song. By reviving this discipline at this particular point in time, Zephaniah shines a critical light on to a range of activity that currently is taking place around the globe, providing a strong voice to the disenfranchised and displaced.

Revolutionary Minds is a chance to experience Zephaniah’s innovative talent in full force; a triumphant creation of emotional songs that highlight the poignant global issues faced by society today.

Maverick Sabre - SOLD OUT

English-Irish singer, songwriter, and rapper

Please note this show is SOLD OUT

Maverick Sabre is an Irish-English rapper, singer-songwriter and guitarist with a style that blends R&B, soul, folk and post-dubstep. Born Michael Stafford in Hackney, London, but raised in County Wexford, Ireland, Sabre made his name through collaborations with numerous artists in both the UK and Ireland before launching on to the national stage with his debut solo single “Look What I Done” in 2011.

Maverick first made his mark with an appearance on the 2008 album Sense The Terror, produced by Terawrizt and Nu-Centz. Positive reviews lead to numerous guest spots with established underground artists, and by 2010 he had worked with the likes of Chase and Status, Professor Green and Jermicide & Danny Digg, while also releasing his first mix-tape, The Travelling Man. The Travelling Man featured the song “Sometimes,” which came with a music video included. This further raised his profile. His first official single “Look What I Done” was released in 2011 and he promoted the single with appearances on Later... with Jools Holland and on Chris Moyles' national radio show.

As he neared the completion of his first solo studio album, he released the single “Let Me Go,” which reached No. 16 on the UK singles chart. Maverick continued his move into the mainstream with the hotly anticipated release of his debut album, Lonely Are The Brave, in early 2012. The album reached No. 2 in the UK and Scottish album charts and No. 3 in Ireland. Two further singles were released from the album, including “I Need.”

Maverick Sabre has established himself as a serious solo artist to watch after years of success in collaborations with a who's who of the UK hip-hop, R&B and dub-step scenes. With his combination of folk guitars, pounding bass beats, haunting vocals and political rapping, Maverick takes inspiration from the likes of Bob Dylan, Tupac and Bob Marley.
American hip-hop artist

Mick Jenkins’ writing is rich with hard-won perspective and dotted with impressively specific, naturalistic details. But on a thematic level, it digs deeper than the here and now, the bus stop in front of him, the string of tour dates looming ahead. His music explores things that humans feel on an intuitive level but struggle to fully understand. From the nature of familiar and romantic love to the elements that sustain life itself, he burrows deep into our collective unconscious in an attempt to give order to the world.

With his new album, Piece of A Man–due out August 3, 2018 on Cinematic Music Group. Mick goes further than he ever has before toward a unified theory of hip-hop: rigorous but sensitive, technical but deeply musical.

Ibibio Sound Machine - SOLD OUT

electronic afro-funk band

Fronted by British / Nigerian vocalist Eno Williams, the music of Ibibio Sound Machine is a clash of African and electronic elements inspired in equal measure by the golden era of West African funk, disco, modern post-punk and electro, and electronic London. These worlds collide via the storytelling lyrical thread of Eno’s vocals in the Ibibio language of Nigeria. The end result is evocative Nigerian poetic imagery set against an edgy Afro-Electro soundscape.

Ibibio Sound Machine’s pulsating first single ‘Let’s Dance’ and also ʻTalking Fish’ earned places on the BBC 6 Music playlist. The follow-up to their self-titled debut album is ‘Uyai’, which means beauty in the Ibibio language and refers to the strength and free spirit of women in general and, in particular, the courage of the women in Eno’s family. ‘Uyai’ purveys a darker, edgier tone to their first effort, which the band says, “maybe reflects the difficult journey the band took from making the first album to completing the second one”. Ibibio Sound Machine is comprised of Max Grunhard on saxophone and synth, John McKenzie on bass, Ghanaian guitar legend Alfred ‘Kari’ Bannerman, Jose Joyette on drums, Brazilian Anselmo Netto on percussion, synth/horn men Tony Hayden & Scott Baylis and vocalist Williams.

Moved to SWX

Please not this show has moved to SWX due to high demand - tickets still valid

Music can often be directly rooted to one location – murky electronics belong to London nightbus rides; smoke-filled saxophone solos evoke images of dusky New York jazz bars – but there’s a lot to be said about music with a universal appeal, a kind which refuses to be pinned down to one specific time and place.

Paris-based multi-instrumentalist Vincent Fenton is a specialist in the latter. As FKJ, aka French Kiwi Juice, his loose and colourful arrangements could soundtrack anything: a house party in Hong Kong, a road trip through the Australian outback, a post-midnight walk alone across moonlit European streets. It’s all there on his 2017 self-titled debut album, which flits between fidgety electronics, smooth blues and pristine pop, all with the flick of a switch.

FKJ’s universal appeal goes a long way to explaining his current, impressive border-crossing rise. With every song on his debut racking up millions Spotify plays, his shows sell out in Asia, Europe, Australia, NZ and America, and his unique, spontaneity-first live delivery – frog-leaping between guitars, keys, sax, vocals and more – is capable of translating to both intimate and giant venues.

Fenton’s journey began as a teenager, where he started to compose songs in his bedroom, and later in-between working as a cinema sound engineer in France. Self-taught and self-starting, he learnt the ropes on countless instruments, before finding an early home on future-facing French collective / label Roche Musique.

2012 EP Time for a Change set a stall for slick, sophisticated, cinematic pop. But if this release got by on an anything-goes approach, 2017’s French Kiwi Juice goes even further. Throughout, there’s a sense that no idea, however ambitious, is dismissed out of hand by Fenton. And the title of the record’s closing track acts as something of a mantra for his work: ‘Why Are There Boundaries’.
