Brand-new, earth-shattering DJ set from the Bristol duo

A marriage of aggressive dance music, quaking bass, and hypnotic electric noise

Giant Swan is the brainchild of Robin Stewart & Harry Wright; an acerbic marriage of energised, aggressive dance music, quaking bass, and hypnotic electronic noise. Steadily assembling an arsenal of heavy hitting EPs and their instant classic, self-titled, debut LP. In anticipation of this very rare DJ set, the band have this public service broadcast:

"When people think of a DJ set they perhaps think of the flawless anti-glowstick precision of a Jeff Mills all-nighter, or maybe a pre-now/post-then ironic DJ set from people who download most of their music from 'soundcloud2mp3.com'. Well, we’re pleased to announce that Giant Swan’s brand-new, earth-shattering DJ set will be somewhere in between the two. If you think discovering electronic music has wiped the slate clean of your indie rock tastes as a 13 year old, well think again and get ready to re-live the most traumatic years of your life through the medium of music. Don’t worry though, the rewards will come in the form of sick club bangers from mates, people we wanna be mates with and people who wanna be mates with us. For fans of: when the drunkest person at the afterparty has full reign over the Spotify playlist."

Dubkasm

Dubkasm are comprised of childhood friends Digistep and DJ Stryda, who kicked off their dub project in the mid-90s before going on to launch their Sufferah's Choice label in 2003, to showcase their studio productions. Their 2009 debut album, Transform I, was a culmination of their work so far, collecting tracks from their previous 12-inches and including vocal turns from Dub Judah, Levi Roots and Afrikan Simba. A dub version of the entire record, along with a remix CD, completed the Transform I Trilogy in 2010.

We have worked with DJ Stryda for many years, hosting his Teachings In Dub nights and it is a pleasure to invite Dubkasm to play through these times, which are hard for anyone in the music industry.

Musician / Dub Producer hailing from the UK, is the eldest son of the world-renowned soundman, Aba Shanti-I. Starting the mystical journey for his keen interest of playing music came from his early days of being exposed to the sound system culture, through his father and their musical infrastructure; also being a regular attendee at his father’s location in the Notting Hill Carnival and travelling with the sound system as a crew member to various sessions in the UK & Europe. As well as working on his own productions, Ashanti makes use of his musical abilities as a performer in various bands as a keyboardist and has had the pleasure of working and collaborating with a number of great singers, musicians & producers in the scene- such as: Vivian Jones, Mad Professor, Joe Ariwa, Ras Divarius, Alpha Steppa, Dan I Locks, Junior Roy, and Ras Teo (just to name a few).

Garden Party 2024 Recap

On Sunday 12 May, we opened our gates for our annual Garden Party

Garden Party 2024 - Image Credit: Alastair Brookes

On Sunday 12 May, we opened our gates once again for Trinity Garden Party – our, free annual day party, celebrating the start of the summer through music, dance and arts.

"It was a fabulous day - thank you to Team Trinity and everyone involved!" - Audience Feedback

In our outdoor venue, The Den, we programmed a diverse range of live music and DJs from across Bristol and The South West. The young musicians from our Next Gen Sounds programme kicked off proceedings, showcasing their musical talents that they’ve honed during the sessions. Following on, we had beautiful acoustic Folk from Eva Penney, groovy Latin rhythms from Los Gusanos, Moroccan Gnawa from Mohammed Errebba, and live Hip Hop from Komposa. Later on in the evening, DJs brought the energy, with an eclectic world music selection from Kesh, amapiano and UK Funky from Josephine Gyasi, and finally Selecta J-Man and Rider Shafique finished things off with a heavy selection of Jungle and Drum and Bass.

Inside, The Main hall was buzzing with performances from our resident dance group Hype Dance, a Turkish Belly Dance circle from Anna K, and finally The Greenbank Ceilidh Collective led the dance with a joyous ceilidh. Upstairs, Fyfe Hall hosted a range of creative craft workshops to keep the young ones busy.

We wanted to say a massive thank you to all who made Garden Party this year such a success; from the talented artists, workshop facilitators, stall-holders, local food vendors, the dedicated sound and lighting team behind the scenes, our hardworking bar staff, the entire Team Trinity, and, of course, all of you who joined us on the day. The event saw our largest ever turnout, with over 3,500 attendees, and thanks to your generosity we raised over £5000 in donations, allowing us to organise more community events like Garden Party as well as supporting our charitable mission of making the arts accessible to all. Garden Party just keeps getting bigger and better, with a 60% increase on last year's attendees, and a 65% increase on last year's donations. Thank you for coming down to support what we do and celebrating music, dance and the arts.

If you'd like to continue to support Trinity, click here to make a donation.

This year's Garden Party is on Sunday 13 May, we have a packed schedule of family-friendly activities and workshops running alongside a fantastic mix of local artists and bands.

Throughout the day we have lots of family and kids activities. From learning circus skills with Invisible youth to making a traditional Japanese puppet in the Bunraku Puppetry Workshop. Don't forget to head to the main hall and take part in a drumming workshop.

This year's main stage highlights include some of the most exciting music coming from Bristol & the South West right now. Headliner, Om Unit brings his unique take on sound-system culture, inspired by hip-hop, dubstep, ambient, jungle and footwork. Big party vibes coming from heavyweight live performance, UK Bass scene leader and lyricist Gardna whose taking the stage with DJ and producer, Kreed.

Bristol musician Sam Neal plays at garden party 2017 Photo credit @ Jessica Bartolini

We’re welcoming back Baraka, featuring musicians from Ghana, Senegal, Dominica, Trinidad and Southern Ireland to bring a sound influenced by Calypso baselines, Blues Harmonica, Soca with Balafon and Flute. Sam Neal who is just one of the talents we have seen grow from our Youth Music Scheme, will be performing songs from his up coming EP. It makes us very proud to see him doing so well. Nice one Sam. Head to our main hall during the afternoon and catch some of the young people attending music sessons at Trinity, Basement Studio and ACE.

We’ve got a great selection of stalls from Bristol makers, including women and men’s clothing stall Ashanti Empress , art work by Cosmic Soul Collective and cruelty free feather jewellery from Phat Feathers.

Volunteering: Trinity's Garden Party relies on volunteers to ensure that the 3k people who come every year have a great time (and, are is are also kept safe). We have a variety of stewarding roles and shifts across the day. If you fancy meeting new people, gaining new skills and getting 2 free gig tickets, then head over here to find out how to offer your time and sign up.

This year we are going to be shaking our buckets hard and asking everyone for a donation of £3 (or what you can afford). We recently launched the Trinity Conservation Campaign to raise the vital funds needed to repair historic damage to the building. Your donations will go directlytowards our campaign, ensuring we secure Trinity’s past, present & future.

We're showcasing the best of Bristol so join us for what is always a great day out.

Featuring:

Ishan Sound & Ossia / Mankala / Manushka / Freshly Baked / Bamalam / Chuman / Sceaming' Miss Jackson & The Slap Ya' Mama Big Band / DJ Blindbat / Babylon Samurai

Plus: Pixel Whipped / Drumming Workshops / Kids Workshops / Food / Bar / Stalls

Ishan Sound: We are very happy to announce our headline act for this year. Ishan is one part of Bristol collective Young Echo, who have been pushing things forward over the years. Ishan's sound draws on soundsystem culture for inspiration. The result is a majestic steppers' rhythm.

Mankala: High-Energy Pan-African Coalition Music, directly inspired by elements of Soukous, Township and Afro Beat as well as Rumba, Cumbia, Samba and Reggae. Mankala forges original and joyous roots dance music adding a distinctive and unique style to this rich blend of genres.

Manushka: Bubbling up from the southwest musical melting pot.. Manushka's offbeat vibes are made for moving feet with raucous, rambunctious stomposity! They have supported the likes of Electric Swing Circus & playing Boom Town 2015.

Sceaming' Miss Jackson & The Slap Ya' Mama Big Band: A rambuncious seven-piece featuring guitars, mandolin, harmonica, Banjo, double bass, washboard, and Drums, they’re more eclectic than most, mixing Western Swing, Jug Band blues, Hokum Blues, Ragtime, Cajun, and Roots-of-Country.

Chuman: His music combines rudimentary electronic sounds, notably with the use of a Bontempi drum-machine, with warm funk guitar riffs. He delivers his honesty charged lyrics in a dry and unmistakably Mancunian way. With no intention of stopping anytime soon expect to see Chuman at venues and festivals across the country, Europe, The World, The Universe.

DJ Blindbat: Rock 'n' Roll, Jump Blues, Rockabilly, Surf, R&B, Country and Exotica played on a record player in public.
