Benjamin Zephaniah, pioneering dub poet, writer, social commentator and music maker has teamed up with renowned producer & engineer, The Sea (Toots & The Maytals, Rodney P, Massive Attack,The Wailers, Buju Banton) & created the incredibly timely album, Revolutionary Minds.

As a live Entity, the five strong Revolutionary Minds expertly provide rich, upbeat, hypnotic dub rhythms behind Benjamin’s beloved vocal and lyrical mastery. Amongst these backing vocals are supplied by Amy True, an artist in her own right she is fast becoming one of the most influential and talked about personalities in the UK Hip Hop scene, being equally formidable in both her ability to sing, and her ability to deliver fast paced gritty lyricism. Revolutionary Minds as a body of work tackles the indigestible topic of the world we live in today, political & economic corruption, global warming, rampant racism, fascist patriarchy...unfortunately we could go on & on.

Amid this chaos though Revolutionary Minds, both band and album, are the soundtrack for the modern revolutionist; it will make you feel empowered, hopeful, galvanised to make a difference and make you dance; it’s a dub thing.

Internationally revered poet, writer and socio-political commentator Benjamin Zephaniah returns to Trinity on his Spring tour of the re-release of his: Revolutionary Minds album.

Benjamin Zepahaniah is widely celebrated as one of the greatest poets of his generation, Zephaniah is strongly influenced by the music and poetry of Jamaica and what he calls “street politics”. His poetry, books and plays have captivated hearts and minds, fuelling imaginations and winning him a legion of fans all over the world.

Though his music is lesser known than his written work it is no less fervent. Created alongside his accomplished producer and collaborator The Sea, Revolutionary Minds album is a deep selection of dub-reggae juggernauts, the essence and style of which fully reinforce the messages projected through Zephaniah’s powerful lyrics

At a seemingly tumultuous and divisive period in our society, Revolutionary Minds revitalises the neglected art of the protest song. By reviving this discipline at this particular point in time, Zephaniah shines a critical light on to a range of activity that currently is taking place around the globe, providing a strong voice to the disenfranchised and displaced.

Revolutionary Minds is a chance to experience Zephaniah’s innovative talent in full force; a triumphant creation of emotional songs that highlight the poignant global issues faced by society today.

Lisa Mitchell

Bear’s Den will release their Ivor Novello nominated single ‘Above The Clouds Of Pompeii’ on July 27th. Watch the official video on YouTube here.

‘Above The Clouds Of Pompeii’ is taken from Bear’s Den’s debut album ‘Islands’ which is out now on Communion Records / Caroline International, and was written by the band’s Andrew Davie.

Speaking of the song, Davie says, “It’s an amalgamation of many of my feelings growing up. Trying to connect with people and also my first times dealing with loss. My Dad and I went on a trip to Pompeii when I was really young and I was thinking about it one day, nostalgically and also kinda painfully remembering stuff from when I was a kid and trying to communicate how I felt back then. That Pompeii trip made a huge impression on me and seemed to be the right place and time in my childhood for me to try and articulate all those things.

“I wrote Above The Clouds Of Pompeii a few years ago, in the back of a VW camper van, on Bear's Den's first ever tour in America. Ben Howard, Nathaniel Rateliff and The Staves were also on that tour and it was hugely inspiring to be surrounded by so many talented songwriters night after night.”

A feature-length music documentary of this tour, ‘Austin To Boston’, will get its global release on 12th June via Netflix and iTunes, fresh from a successful run of screenings at international film festivals. The film was directed by James Marcus Haney (No Cameras Allowed), produced by Ben Lovett (Mumford & Sons) & Ty Johnson (Sideshow Alley), and narrated by Gill Landry (Old Crow Medicine Show).

Watch the trailer for ‘Austin To Boston’ here.

Bear’s Den will embark on a European headline tour this October 2015, culminating with a previously announced show at London’s Roundhouse on 27th October. Tickets go on general sale on Friday 5th June at 10am.

The new dates follow the band’s completely sold out tour earlier in the year where numerous venues upgraded due to ticket demand.

'Powerful sultry vocals over often fervently moody electronica' Bank's kicks off her UK tour here at Trinity

Thu 20th March 2014

LA’s Banks ploughs a polished furrow in deeply personal themes delivered as powerful sultry vocals over often fervently moody electronica.

On this UK tour she has been joined by LuckyMe’s resident DJ and darling of Rinse FM and Radio One, Eclair Fifi, here ushering in the audience with a selection that mines the seam where r’n’b meets bleeding edge, post-dubstep production. It’s an at once accessible and thrilling alliance - and the perfect fanfare for a visiting artist that has leant so heavily on the production values of the UK’s taste-making underground.

Taking the stage to sinister scene-setter Before I Ever Met You, backlit and misted in dry ice, the slight American cuts a gothic silhouette as she sashays back and forth from the shadows.

On stage, Banks is flanked by two musicians, one at a drum kit, the other alternating between keys and guitar, augmenting the backing track. There is a synergy at play here, and with a lighting production that perfectly encapsulates the intensity of her sound, the show is at once intimate and powerful.

Following the haunting This Is What It Feels Like Now the more upbeat Change reveals a little of the true vocal power our host can wield. Then just when it seems the whole evening might be trotted out in the same vain she lets rip on Brain.

Perhaps because this is the first night of the tour, from this point we see a more relaxed and confident performance. We are treated to a debut airing and a little more in the way of conversation as the mood gradually lightens through Warm Water towards something of a soulful, even sunny, groove.

The dark and light of ‘Waiting Game’ brings the night full circle before our host announces her last of the evening is to be another 'world premier', a mild disappointment of crude r’n’b-informed pop, perhaps hinting at a more American aesthetic for the forthcoming album.

This would be a shame, for us in the UK at least, as it is through the unapologetic intelligence and atmospherics of her material to date that she stands a greater longevity in hearts and minds over here.
