Haramacy acts as catalyst for cross-cultural engagement for artists from Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) communities.

It creates a space for BIPOC artists to collaborate and create works that explore intersectional social issues (race, gender, class, and ethnicity) that exist within their communities and those of their peers.

Haramacy is comprised of an online residency program and an evening of multi arts performances hosted at the Trinity Centre in Bristol; bringing together sound, light, visual, dance, words, and more to celebrate outsider narratives.

The title Haramacy, is an amalgamation of the Arabic word ‘haram’, meaning indecent or forbidden, and the English word ‘pharmacy’, implying a safe, trustworthy space that prescribes the antidote to ailments caused by intersectional, social issues.

Now in its 3rd edition, Haramacy is presented by COMMUN in London, Bristol, and Birmingham to advocate for higher BIPOC participation in the Arts.

A Photo Recap of Scottee's Workshop "Making Stuff About Stuff" by Alexa Ledecky

Scottee is a performer and writer who creates work that tackles challenging subjects head-on. We kicked off our IGNiTE Spring season with his show Fat Blokes and added to it an afternoon workshop that gave participants the opportunity to discover more about Scottee's creative practice.

During the afternoon prior to performing his show as part of Trinity’s IGNiTE, Scottee gave a workshop titled “Making Stuff About Stuff”. The session was delivered in an open-minded, safe space, allowing all participants to exchange ideas freely.

Those who attended were able to share amongst one another and with theatre maker and performer Scottee himself. They discussed ways of finding inspiration for creating new work through different exercises.

Scottee introduced ways of finding new themes to develop new meaningful work. He started off by encouraging the participants to create a list of words that reflects their identity in their own eyes and the eyes of others.

In the second phase of the workshop, Scottee invited the participants to create a list of what makes them angry and to choose one of these particular ideas and write a “rant” about it.

"It felt like a really safe and generous moment. I liked having less 'showing work' and more talking about creative process in an interactive way" - workshop participant

A fate defying triple bill from Julia Thorneycroft Dance, 'Get Lucky' squares up to unluckiest day of the month with a cabaret style evening of daring dance theatre.

'Frustra' - Through humour, striking imagery and powerful intricate movement a story unravels between a man and a woman. Competition builds, passion increases and the dancers' blood boils as they attempt to out do each other in a fast paced ‘pas de deux’. An Argentine tango…..perhaps.

'Breath:Taking' - A thoughtful duet exploring grief, 'Breath:Taking' was created in tribute to Julia's nephew Conrad, killed whilst serving in Afghanistan. Using Mike York's visual arts work 'Empty Chairs' as it's impetus, this piece explores the space left behind by those we have lost.

'Endeavour' - Exploring our love/hate relationship with reality TV competitions 'Endeavour' takes a satirical swipe at shows such as Crufts and Great British Menu. Giving a humorous nod to a range of dance styles and a light hearted look at the evolution of human kind.

Gerry Attics

here are now seniors' dance companies in many cities. They work with professional choreographers to make dance pieces which build on the presence, experience and movement characteristics of elders and create stunning theatre. The best known is probably Sadlers Wells' Company of Elders, and there are companies in Bath, Cardiff, Caernarfon, the North East and various London boroughs to name a few.

They produce dance performance which stands up in terms of artistic excellence and telling content, and showcases older people's creativity.

It's time for this to happen in Bristol!

Two taster session are taking place in April and May to kickstart Bristol's own Dance Performance Company for over-55s. The company will be for people with or without dance experience, whatever your age, size, background or movement range.

If you love dancing, used to dance when you were younger, have always wanted to dance, or are drawn to performance, this company is for you! The focus will be on developing and expanding movement and dance skills, exploring different aspects of movement, and creating a dance performance based on members' ideas and experiences.

The company will be led by Julia Thorneycroft.

Julia has many years experience of creating, directing and teaching dance in professional, community and academic contexts. She is Programme Leader for the Dance Foundation Degree,City of Bristol College, and has Artistic Director roles for Kinesis Youth Dance Company, and Julia Thorneycroft Young Dancers Company. Her performance company, Julia Thorneycroft Dance, creates accessible dance theatre that explores current social themes and human nature, engaging the core human emotions of its audience. She is committed to reaching out beyond traditional theatre space into outdoor festivals and rural touring.
