Adrian Utley (Portishead) brings together an orchestra of electric guitar players to interpret Terry Riley's 'In C'. Written in 1964 and perhaps one of the most influential pieces of music from the 20th Century, one that established minimalism as a music genre, In C's simple musical rules - 53 musical phrases in C and no duration - allow for infinite variations.
Utley's impressive Guitar Orchestra is augmented by percussion and organs making for a vintage and mesmeric sound. The effect is an organic musical experience very much created in front of the audience both fragile and thunderingly uplifting.
" I've been exploring the sonic possibilities of massed guitars for a while now in various contexts from pure noise to the sacred choral music of Arvo Part. So it was interesting to see what would happen if we had 20 electric guitars plus organs playing In C.
It is an amazing piece of writing and original thought. A new free idea of organised group playing. The beginnings of what we know as minimalism." Adrian Utley
Invada Records have released a specially recorded live version of 'In C' by Adrian Utley's Guitar Orchestra: http://www.invada.co.uk/
"Adrian Utley... employs 19 electric guitars to build moments of brooding intensity or hypnotic calm." The Times
"a uniquely engaging, irresistibly hypnotic experience." Rock A Rolla
"Utley succeeds in demonstrating the distinctive potential of the guitar to bring out new elements of Riley's endlessly-adaptable composition." The Skinny
"Utley and co's take on In C may well be the most texturally persuasive version of the piece yet committed to tape." Art & Music
"... the triplet tremors seemingly passed from one guitar to another about five minutes in are a lovely example of the work's planned serendipity." The Independent
Young Echo: a group of musicians individually composing electronic music who will bring their rich sounds to fill the full height of the beautiful new space.
