Working to Make Equality Happen
This seminar (the 4th) will explore how we can develop effective strategies to counter racism in all of its forms in ways that are effective within our professional practice. Our purpose in bringing together a range of speakers is to help delegates to be clear about what the protected characteristic of race means in 2014.
The Equality Act 2010, like preceding legislation, covers colour, nationality and ethnic or national origin. The IEDP is seeking to establish that the category ‘race’ does not have, or need, a hierarchy. Anyone who is treated less favourably because of their colour, nationality or ethnic origin is provided with protection under the law. Some groups of people are systematically targeted for abuse and discrimination. In recognising the different manifestations of racism we aim to combat them all and advance equality.
Panel of Speakers:
Lord Herman Ouseley - Member of House of Lords and Chair of Kick it Out
Malcolm Wilson - Traveller and Head of Virtual School
Pragna Patel - Director of Southall Black Sisters
Ila Chandavarkar - Women’s Resource Centre
Paul Stephenson - OBE Anti-racist campaigner
The format of the day will ensure active participation of delegates as well as keynote speakers.
